There's a dumpster outside our apartment building. It's one of those two-doors-flip-open-on-top deals. The big truck empties it at 4 in the morning when it can actually drive into the parking lot.

This dumpster is not locked, because it's used by people in our building, the neighboring dentist's office, and (I think) two smaller buildings across the street owned by the same management company. So it's also a favorite with "trash thieves" ie: people who have no place to put their trash so they put it in the trunk of their cars and drive around until they find an unlocked dumpster and leave it in the dead of the night.

This is certainly preferable to dumping it off the nearest highway embankment, and anyway, I don't pay the bill. So I don't really care. But last night there was a whole lot of thumping and banging going on out there around 12:30 am, so I finally had to go look out the window. There's a guy out there with a minivan pulled up to the dumpster. There are a couple of bags still in the minivan, but the guy is jumping up and down on the lid of the dumpster to compact the trash. It's also snowing pretty hard. When he jumps down off of the dumpster, he lands in a big snowdrift and actually has to take off his shoes one by one and empty them. Then he continues pushing down on the dumpster lids. The lids weren't even up very much--I've certainly seen fuller dumpsters.....

Me, personally, if I were going to drive around late at night illegally dumping trash....I bet I wouldn't be nearly so considerate. I'd just fill it on up and get out of there.
