Some are awesome--you can judge!
Apr. 7th, 2010 05:34 pmbelatedly in response to
sigerson 's challenge to "Post something awesome in your LJ"...here are some scattered piece of news:
Spring is here! Stuff is blooming in our yard! Daffodils and hyacinths currently; the crocuses have already croaked (as PoC keeps saying) and one early-bird tulip has opened. Rhubarb is starting to come up, along with garlic and strawberries (not to be used all at the same time!) I'll start sunflowers as soon as the bulbs have faded in the front garden.
Friends of ours are moving to Ithaca! We got to see them last weekend and play dorky games. They were out here apartment hunting; they hope to move in June/July. We also got to grill for the first time this year, cleaned the house and opened all the windows, enjoyed the nice weather, and had an awesome weekend.
Change may be afoot! Very slowly, but still afoot: I'm planning to start taking some classes this summer at SU (where I can use a limited number of remitted-tuition credits from my employer. What am I taking? Intro bio and intro chem, in preparation for applying to nursing school in 1-2 years. Yep, nursing school. Obviously, this would be a complete departure from what I'm doing right now--but I'm excited about the prospect. (Granted, I haven't even applied--much less gotten into--school yet.) While I enjoy what I'm doing right now, it's obvious to me that this organization will NEVER reach a point where I could be employed full-year and earn a salary that would allow us to do the other things we'd like to do. (I'm not talking extravagant things, here, but I'd like to be able to afford child care when we decide to have kids. And I'd like to not have to play the "waiting game" when we get a bill--where invariably I need to wait for next week's paycheck to come in to pay off household expenses. We're committed to not having any credit card debt, and we've managed so far. But when groceries, mortgage, and a few incidentals (and putting some money aside in savings) = more than our month's earnings, it makes it pretty clear that we can't afford something like child-care right now! And that's not likely to change.) So, I'm taking the first steps towards a new career. We'll see what happens--maybe we'll win the lottery and it will all be moot! But it is about more than the money: I've been interested in nursing for quite a while now, and have often thought "when I leave theatre, I think I'd like to go into nursing."
I have more thoughts about the potential career shift (and my aggravations with my current job, even though I do like it most of the time, but they'll have to wait for another post. Sharing of experiences relating to career shifts, going back to school, and/or nursing are more than welcome!)
And finally, a question: Should I go to my 10-year college reunion? Especially since most of you, dear WC alums, are not in my class year and won't be there? Is it fun? Has anyone been? It would be in the middle of classes, and I'm not too keen on spending the money if it won't be fun....
time to leave work now, so bye!
