Nursing School week #16

(I typed this out on Friday night, and then LJ choked while trying to post it. Let's see if it works this time!)
This was our official last week of nursing classes--all we had to do was take the final exam on Thursday. A&P and Psych both met this week, but all in all it was still a pretty relaxed week!
I did well on the final for nursing (though a little less well than I've done on the unit exams), so even though the official grades aren't posted yet, I can feel safe in saying that I've passed the first semester!
Some facts about grades: In the nursing classes, any cumulative grade of less than 75% counts as a failing grade. (I'm not sure what goes on your transcript/GPA--an F or a C-, but either way, you can't move forward with that grade.) I got the feeling going into the final exam that a lot of people were teetering close to the line, and with the Final counting for 25% of our grade, I think there were a lot of stressed-out students in the room on Thursday! As I've mentioned, our grades get posted online, but the class average isn't posted--just our rank in the class. So, I don't have any real way of guessing how many people (out of 78) may have passed the class--I guess I'll just have to see who's in the room in January. I can say, however, that with an average of (only) 93.5%, my rank in the class is #1. I don't really care about my class rank (okay, I'll admit to being a little bit pleased, but I don't think it's a very meaningful statistic). I'm mentioning it to make the point that the range of passing grades in the class is not really very wide--only a spread of 18.5 points. (This sort of noodling may be interesting only to me...if so, I apologize!)
At any rate, I plan to spend some time this weekend studying for the A&P exam--it's just a unit exam on the respiratory and urinary systems, not a cumulative final. I was relieved to learn that the instructor will not be teaching A&P next semester. Thank goodness! His fundamental lack of understanding of the material is just...a problem. Basically, he's reading the textbook and then trying to come in and teach us what he's just grasping himself. His lectures are confusing (though at least he's sort of figured out how to use PowerPoint by now); he jumps around and skips through slides making it hard to take notes; he can *still* barely manage the classroom--one minute he's upset because no one volunteers the answer to a question, and the next minute he's upset because someone said the answer without raising their hand; he routinely mispronounces words in bizzare/confusing ways (he kept saying "naturopathic" when he meant "natriuretic" the other day); he makes incorrect statements (ex: he claimed women are more prone to osteoporosis because they are more sedentary than men...); etc, etc, etc. Long story short, I will not be sad to see (hopefully) the last of this guy!
In other news, PoC and I played a giant game of Carcassonne this evening before he went off to work. He won, as usual--616 to 405. It's nice to have a bit of time to play games again, though I need to get going on Christmas presents as well!
